Pascal Wehrlein has put his stunning start performances down to guess work.
The Manor driver has made up 34 positions on the opening lap this year, behind only McLaren's Fernando Alonso who has gained 40 places.
But Wehrlein, who also serves as a Mercedes test driver, has said there is no perfect formula to his good form, only guessing where is best to place his car.
"Definitely it's easier when you are in the back to gain positions, that's clear," Wehrlein is quoted by Autosport. "The first lap is very important for that, especially the first two corners.
"It's all about guessing where the best place is," he said. "Most of the time, something happens at those two corners so it's all about being in the right place, especially when you are at the back."
Wehrleinb is thought to be in the frame for a move to Force India next year after Nico Huulkenberg's departure from the Mercedes customer team.
