McLaren are looking to extend Fernando Alonso's contract beyond 2017.
That is despite the Spaniard issuing a number of quit threats throughout the year if he is not impressed with the 2017 breed of Formula One cars.
"I'm sure he might (retire)," Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg told AS newspaper. "He is a driver used to winning so I'm sure it's not fun fighting for tenth."
However, sports newspaper Marca has revealed that contract talks for 2018 have begun.
"It took place in the McLaren hospitality area after dark," the report claims.
"They (McLaren) want to keep Fernando at least until 2020, to consolidate the project and be in the fight for the title again."
