Felipe Massa has revealed that he came close to retiring after his time with Ferrari concluded at the end of 2013.
The Brazilian won races in each of his first three seasons with the Italian team, and came within a point of winning the championship in 2008, but after a near-fatal accident in 2009, his form dipped and he was forced to play second fiddle to Fernando Alonso.
"I was thinking to do it myself three years ago," Massa said about his recent retirement announcement after it became clear that Williams would not be renewing his contract. "You need to be strong enough to decide things that are sometimes quite difficult. That is what I did."
H was snapped up by Williams after the 2013 season however, and spent three years with the team but admits that he is happy with his decision to step away from the sport.
"I'm relieved and happy with what I'm doing," he insisted. "I think this year was the time to do that."
