Jenson Button has said that the only reason he would remain in Formula One next year would be for race wins.
The Brit is just 25 races away from equalling Rubens Barrichello's record of 323 races but he insists the question of whether he will reach the milestone will come down to whether he wants to.
"If I want to. The question is whether I want to or not. At the moment I don't know the answer," he said. "The only reason I would want to be in F1 next year would be to go for race wins, whether that's McLaren or somewhere else."
Button has been linked with a move to his first team Williams, or an exit from the sport altogether. In three races time he will take over from Mika Hakkinen as McLaren's longest serving driver in terms of race starts.
When asked about the statistic, Button said: "When I think about Mika and how early he retired, I understand why I'm about to go past him."
If Button does indeed retire, it will leave Kimi Raikkonen as the sport's elder statesman. When asked if he was surprised if Ferrari had opted to re-sign the 2007 world champion, Button said the would not have been shocked no matter what happened with the Finn.
"I don't know his situation or the background so I wouldn't have been surprised either way," he told Finnish newspaper Turun Sanomat.
