The European Commission has launched an investigation into possible unfair competition by Red Bull. The case does not concern Formula 1 directly, but the company’s activities in the energy drink market. It is not yet clear whether the inquiry could have consequences for the brand’s F1 teams.
Red Bull is one of the world’s largest energy drink companies and holds a dominant position in several markets. Beyond beverages, the brand is active across global sport, with Formula 1 as its flagship. Red Bull Racing fields Max Verstappen as its superstar, while sister team Racing Bulls has also grown stronger in recent seasons.
In recent years, some rivals have questioned the close relationship between Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls. While both teams comply with FIA and Formula 1 regulations, critics have raised concerns that the shared ownership structure may offer competitive advantages. Drivers have also moved easily between the two teams, adding to the scrutiny from competitors.
What Is Happening?
The European Commission has now opened a formal investigation into Red Bull’s parent company. Regulators will examine whether Red Bull has unfairly restricted competition in the energy drink sector. The Commission said it has indications that Red Bull may have developed a strategy to limit sales of rival cans larger than 250 millilitres. Notably, the Commission specifically mentioned the Netherlands in its press release.
According to the Commission, Red Bull may have offered retailers advantages if they refrained from selling or visibly displaying competing products. This would be against EU rules. Red Bull allegedly targeted a direct competitor that was not named.
Could It Affect Formula 1?
The potential consequences for Red Bull are unclear. A heavy fine could also impact its sporting operations, including both Formula 1 teams. Red Bull has previously considered selling Racing Bulls, which raises questions about whether the investigation could influence future decisions.
For now, no link has been made between the inquiry and Formula 1, but the financial impact could still be significant depending on the eventual outcome.
