Steiner doesn't see teams sacrificing 2020 in anticipation for 2021

Guenther Steiner believes no teams will sacrifice their 2020 season in order to get the jump on the field in 2021.

New regulations will be introduced for in under two years' time, with the FIA confirming on Thursday night that confirmation of the fresh regulations would come in October later this year.

What will be outlined in the technical requirements could change the pecking order of the sport, as it aims to bring the teams closer together.

But before then, there is a 2020 world championship, and Steiner doesn't see teams giving up on it - although he did admit that they will have people working on the following year's car.

"No one will really do that," Steiner said in response to a question regarding forfeiting 2020. "I don't think anyone will say 'we are not doing anything in 2020 to get our 2021 car'.

"Each year, whatever you do, you will learn. I don't know how many people we will have focusing on 2021, but we will have some. Everybody will be different, and we'll see who comes out best.

"You need to understand [the regulations] to get the knowledge, I don't know exactly how many, percentage-wise, but there will be some work started."

Pirelli should go softer on tyre allocations

Pirelli has been at the root of Haas' issues this year, as it has suffered from problems with the tyres throughout the year.

Steiner believes that bringing softer compounds to a race would help Haas, as the Pirelli can't change the structure of the tyre.

"It's more of an understanding going forward and explaining to them where we struggle," Steiner said. "They can't by regulation, change the tyre. The only thing that they can change is what tyre they bring to the track.

"Do we bring from C1 to C3 or C3 to C5? That is what they can change going forward and maybe they saw that they brought the harder tyres, and that they should go softer."

There is a great story from Ross Brown book about the way Benetton created 1994 champion car, starting back in end 1992 when two creative teams were working on two cars, one for 1993 and one for 1994, while most of the efforts were concentrating on 1994 while 1993 car development was quite poor but happily they were able to win one race and make some podiums.
