Perez: Future Mexican GP looking 'more promising'

Sergio Perez says the future of the Mexican Grand Prix is looking "more promising" amid doubt over its future.

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez's contract to host the race runs out after 2019 event. Earlier this year, the Mexican government confirmed that it would be pulling funds to stage the Grand Prix.

Perez feared that the race could disappear from the F1 calendar for half a century, but is now hopeful that it could stay on the calendar as it searches for alternative funds.

"It’s looking a bit more promising lately,” Perez said last weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

“I really hope that for Formula 1 that we don’t lose such a big venue, it’s been the best Grand Prix in the last four years and I hope we get to see the Grand Prix more often in the calendar.

“Also for my country I think we need Formula 1 because it’s a great exposure, it really shows how great is Mexico as a country, so I’m more optimistic than I used to be.

When pressed on why he is more optimistic, Perez replied: "I heard of the deal is not really shutdown.

“There are some talks, I obviously don’t have the full details and it’s not my job to really comment on that. It’s just that things probably aren’t as bad as they were so there might be some hope.”

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is one of five circuits that doesn't have a contract in place beyond the 2019 season, with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (Spain), Silverstone (Great Britain), Hockenheim (Germany)  and Monza (Italy) the other tracks in danger of dropping off the calendar.
