Alonso set for IndyCar road course test

Fernando Alonso will test a Honda-powered Andretti Autosport Dallara DW12 early next month, according to RACER. The test will give Alonso an insight into the series he could be racing in next year as speculation grows that he will be joining the IndyCar field.

On Tuesday, the Spaniard announced that he would be leaving Formula 1 at the end of the current season. Alonso has long been liked to a full-time IndyCar move after he raced at the Indianapolis 500 in 2017.

The two-time F1 world champion was a fan favourite at the race last year, and was in contention for victory before an engine issue forced him to retire. However, he won the 'Rookie of the Year' award for his efforts, and made a promise to return again in the future.

A number of tests are reportedly being lined up for Alonso, with an outing at the Barber Motorsports Park likely to go ahead in early September. It coincides with IndyCar's guidelines regarding testing on a track that will not appear on the calendar for the rest of the season.

  • I've considered giving Indy a go again, but I dunno... Is it worth it?

    • If Fernando is in it I'll be watching. That's pretty much how it works. I wouldn't have given Indy a chance before, but after watching Indy 500 in 2017 I had a bit of a change of heart. We'll see.

Wellll, maybe consider it. I turned off Indy when they started using those LMP1 cars instead of open-wheelers. That's changed for this year, and the racing's gotten better! The cars don't have that rear weight bias crap going on anymore, so there's open-wheel talent coming to the forefront.

All I can say is try it. You can just bitch at me after you've watched a road-race and you want your two hours back! I can take it!

i was watching season 1993 when Nigel Mansell joined Indy and would be watching if Alonso decides to race next year, but not without him there.
I have feeling he will walk all over the opposition on, at least, street stile racing track

    • I might have to consider it then. And *takes note* I will bitch at 2GRX7 if it turns out that it wasted 2 hours of my precious time which I could've used for doing productive stuff like playing games. ;)
