Canada defeat means 'consequences' - Wolff

Toto Wolff says there will be "consequences" following Mercedes' clear defeat in Montreal.

With a fresh engine spec, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel dominated in Canada, therefore re-taking the championship lead by a single point.

"We came to Montreal thinking our car would be strong," Mercedes boss Wolff said.

"Now we are going home with the realisation that Ferrari had the better car. In qualifying and the race.

"We need to wake up now. Consequences are necessary, but they are discussed internally," he told ORF television.

Team chairman Niki Lauda confirmed: "Ferrari had the better car, the better engine and the better fuel consumption. They overtook us in the areas we were ahead.

"Now something has to happen in every area.

"We were number 1 in fuel consumption, and now Ferrari and Renault can do better than us," Lauda added.

However, the F1 legend said there is hope for Paul Ricard in two weeks.

"Then we'll get our new engine. That should help us," Lauda said.

World champion Lewis Hamilton, who lost his title lead in Montreal, commented: "Ferrari has the most consistent car. And Red Bull is equal to us now."

But Im not sure Ferrari are ahead in reliability.

By the way: is this Wolff saying he is into BDSM, and that "someone" over at Mercedes is going to have a rough night a la fifty shades of Grey?

Bit of a one way assumption from Toto. Bottas was 2nd by 6 secs. and Raikkonen was behind LH by 6 secs.
Race of the day appears to be DR as he at least moved up 2 from Quali and all the rest sat still. Pity the other 4 didn’t have a poke.

  They couldn't otherwise you would have seen more overtaking. They could get into 1.5 secs of the car in front and that's it .. stuck.
  
  DRS patches will not solve the lack of overtaking, This race was dry ....

Mercedes seems closer to Red Bull than to Ferrari and it's been that way all year except for Spain. The only reasons Ferrari aren't dominating both championships are (1) Raikkonen's mediocrity and Ferrari's penchant for ruining his races to protect Sebastián, (2) Vettel throwing away a couple of race wins.

  Nah, not really, its still very much Mercedes vs Ferrari. Sooner or later, Red Bull will be limited by their current PU. And sadly, Kimi is really underperforming right now (or its Vettel thats overperforming? Its hard to tell).
