Verstappen 'still a child' - Villeneuve

Jacques Villeneuve has hit out at Max Verstappen for threatening to "head butt" journalists in Montreal.

On Thursday ahead of the Canadian grand prix, struggling Red Bull driver Verstappen issued the threat when asked about his spate of recent crashes.

"The journalist's role is to report facts, even if Verstappen answered the question a hundred times," Villeneuve told Le Journal de Montreal.

"The responsibility of the driver is to answer -- if the question is justified. But Verstappen had no right to take offense and react in that way," he added.

"You need to be aware of your mistakes in order to progress, and he has not done that. Instead he showed a lack of respect and education.

"In some ways he is still a child. He was dragged out of the cradle and put into a car. That's probably why he is not at Ricciardo's level and even looks bad.

"If Red Bull considers him to be the future, he must beat his teammate. In the meantime, the opposite is true. He is overrated," Villeneuve concluded.

Some truth in the blabber, but still just take a hike Villeneuve.

    • But I wouldnt really call him overrated. The fude is talented for sure, he just need to cool down a tad so as not to waste that talent.

On a sidenote, if Ver is 20 and a child, what am I? 23 and still a teen?! Im so confused... I... I dont even know what I am anymore.... Villeneuve! Explain to me!

Not sure if this is taken out of context: if I am right Max Verstappen did beat his teammate Daniel Ricciardo this weekend. In training, qualifiying, race and the fastest lap.

As for the rest, I don't really think it is a drivers responsibility to answer any question over and over again, regardless of what the journalists believe is their right. It all depends on the quality of the question and that quality drops quickly with every repeat. Let's be real here, what is the point asking the same question twice in a row? This is not elementary school, Journalists are expected to have risen beyond that, in my opinion.

And further, I do like a driver giving answers that show a bit of character and personality of the person, whatever this character is. The robotic, rehearsed and repeated answers that tell nothing aren't worth listening too, as there is often little or no news value in. Journalists may think otherwise but I am still the client of their work, so I decide (for my experience that is of course).

  • Villeneuve can't say anything that isn't controversial. Truth is that Max, as expected had a great race and beat Ricciardo throughout the weekend. The pattern is clear. When Mac doesn't crash, he seems to outqualify and outrace Ricciardo most of the time. I didn't think Max needed a new approach either, he just needed to stop making idiotic mistakes. It was desperation and stupidity not an approach to racing. I think he's gotten the message now.

  • His remark is taken fully out of context. If you had seen his face expression, it isn't worth to comment on his remark.
He just wants to point out he is finished with the ' crash' questions.
Villeneuve can't critisize anything he did in the car this weekend, so he has cry over something Max said.
Jacques get a live and take a hike.

  • First smart thing I've heard Villeneuve say. He's a child in his mind because he is not mature.

    • Max is way more mature than most people reacting at this website.
