Alonso not worried about missing Indy 500

Fernando Alonso says that he is not worrying about being absent from the Indianapolis 500 this year. In 2017, the Spaniard famously skipped the Monaco Grand Prix to contest at the gruelling 500-mile race around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

After being in contention for victory for much of the race, Alonso's Honda engine gave up towards the end. However, the double Formula 1 world champion has vowed to return to the race in the future, in a bid to win the triple crown of motorsport.

The triple crown (the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans) has been won only once before, by Graham Hill. With Alonso competing in the World Endurance Championship this year, which includes Le Mans, he admits he is not worried about missing out on the Indy 500 in 2018.

"To be honest, I don't even want to be there," he said. "Of course I will watch, following every session and test. I have many friends there and maintain close contact with the engineers," he added.

"Everyone tells me that the new aero package works really well, so when I see it on TV then I will want to turn a lap. I do miss being there, but currently it's hard for me to add another race to my programme," Alonso concluded.
