Sainz admits slight disappointment over final lap time

Carlos Sainz admits that he is slightly disappointed with his final lap time in qualifying, but is happy to have finished inside the top ten. The Spaniard qualified in ninth place, behind the two Haas' and his teammate Nico Hulkenberg.

This year will be Sainz's first full season with Renault, having joined the French manufacturer towards the end of the 2017 season. His fastest lap in Q3 was a tenth and a half down on Hulkenberg's, which he admits has disappointed him. However, he was happy to meet the expectations of getting inside the top ten.

"We expected both cars to be in the top ten and we achieved this today, which confirms the good progress of the whole team," said Sainz. "I had hoped to be a little bit higher than this, however the lap time didn’t come. I’ll take a good look at that today with my engineers."

Sainz first raced around Albert Park in 2015 and has scored points on every occasion since. For Sunday's Grand Prix, the 23-year-old aims to keep up that trend and get his 2018 campaign off to a strong start.

"For tomorrow, I’m convinced we can move forward,” said the former Toro Rosso driver. "It’s going to be tight but we have a good car and a good chance to battle with the cars around us. I’m confident we can put together a competitive race," he added.
