Toto Wolff: "No excuses for Bottas in 2018"

Toto Wolff says Valtteri Bottas has "no excuses" this year as he pushes for a new Mercedes contract. Bottas had a mixed first year with F1's top team, but he is aiming for a full title assault in 2018. At the same time, he was only given a new single-year contract.

But Bottas insists: "The pressure is now much less. I have gone through one season with Lewis (Hamilton), and the team is now familiar to me. At my best level I can get poles and win races. Last February, I had to learn about the team but now I can focus just on improving the performance. I'm able to concentrate on driving a lot more," he added.

He said it's obvious that many other drivers want his seat, but he will focus only on driving as well as possible in 2018. "At this stage, contractual issues seem completely secondary," said Bottas.

"It will only be considered a little later. My goals are so high that they eliminate any external pressure," he is quoted by Iltalehti newspaper. "If I achieve them, there will certainly be no problem with the contracts."

When asked if he is worried that an improved Bottas is targeting the title this year, teammate Lewis Hamilton said in Barcelona: "No. But I'd say that about everyone," he added. "It has nothing to do with Valtteri. He made a great impression in the last races last year and I expect him to be in top form. But I am too," Hamilton added.

Finally, team boss Wolff said he expects Bottas to challenge Hamilton in 2018."If he can step up and challenge Lewis, he certainly has his place among the best formula one drivers. If he does not, he will notice that there are no excuses," he said. (GMM)

I have nothing against Bottas but I would dearly love to see Alonso, Verstappen or Vettel in that car, have a proper team battle not a #1 and #2.

    • Yes, but that wont happen, so we can only hope that Bottas will step it up in 2018, or that any potential replacement in 2019 will do the job.

Bottas' 2017 campaign got off to a less than ideal start with the way everything went down with the Rosberg situation. This year, I agree, no excuses. I'm afraid he's just not good enough, though. I'm hoping Ricciardo joins Merc for the 2019 season - it'd be interesting to Hamilton against a proven top driver

    • I mostly hope it was down to last year's car not being optimal for Bottas, but as you say, I doubt he will get anywhere close to Hamilton's level. Sadly, I dont think Hamilton would allow Ricciardo into the club.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to, with how he joined the team late.

At this point in not so sure it's Hamilton's decision to make. He is getting older as well, and rumours about retirement have been going on for a couple of seasons now. So Mercedes will have to look to the future at some point. Of course much depends on how both Hamilton, but especially Bottas does this year.

Hammy probably won’t let anyone into the club who he considers a threat, probably already drafted that clause ready for his negotiations.

    • I agree. I just dont see him accepting anyone legit competitive into Mercedes.

Looks like Ricciardo is being lined up for his seat.

Has anyone any documented proof that Hamilton would block a competitive teammate? Because I think you’re all wrong. Hamilton fears no-one and would welcome a fight, even Verstappen. It’s over at Ferrari where you have these nonsense conditions with a lead driver veto over his teammate. Hamilton has not got many years left. I think he’ll retire early and enjoy his money and why not. With paydays like his, he wouldn’t mind being beaten now and again...
