Ricciardo set for Silverstone gearbox penalty

Red Bull Racing's Daniel Ricciardo is set for a five-place grid penalty this weekend at the British Grand Prix. This is a result of Ricciardo's current gearbox failing to meet the mandatory six races that it must meet, explaining the demotion.

Jo Bauer, FIA Technical Delegate, issued a report on Saturday morning which confirmed that Red Bull Racing had changed the gearbox following first and second practice on Friday where Ricciardo was sixth fastest in both sessions. Through this penalty, Ricciardo will join Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas who will also receive a five-place penalty at Silverstone for the same problem.

Heading to the British Grand Prix this weekend, Ricciardo is on a personal best run of five consecutive podium finishes, and was looking competitive in practice. However, with this penalty, it is likely that this run will end this weekend.

  • This is stupid really. Drivers have to suffer for the fact that the car part is not engineered to last required number of races. Fine the team or deduce constructor points, don't punish the driver

What a farce. This is supposed to be the pinnacle of motor sport. What other race series have such a crazy penalty regime. Keep the competition on the track not in the garage.
