Hamilton plays down retirement rumours

Lewis Hamilton has played down rumours that he could retire from Formula 1 at the end of 2017. Earlier in the week, when speaking to the FIA magazine, Auto, Hamilton said  "I can decide to stop at the end of this year."

This statement created a number of unexpected headlines about Hamilton, suggesting that the triple world champion could follow in the footsteps of Nico Rosberg by retiring at the end of this season, paving the way for an up and coming young driver to the Mercedes outfit.

When asked about the headlines in Baku, Hamilton fought back: "I can't even remember this interview," he said. "I don't feel like it's time to make room for someone. Of course, it's also my dream - as it is for many athletes - to stop at the top of my game. But if you do, you don't know what you would have achieved after that. Many athletes stopped too early, so you don't want that either.”

With both Ferrari seats up for grabs in 2018 with neither Sebastian Vettel or Kimi Raikkonen signed to the team next year, Hamilton was also asked if a move to the Scuderia was on the cards.

"I'm not thinking of a change to Ferrari," he replied. "All I'm thinking about is how I can beat Ferrari. I don't make a secret of the respect I have for them and how important the brand is to the sport, and I'm also a big fan of their road cars. Who knows what the future holds for me? But I can't imagine driving for Ferrari now."

Hamilton currently drives for Mercedes and lies in second place in the Drivers’ Championship, 12 points behind Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel with the Italian team having a resurgence in 2017, threatening Mercedes’ dominance of recent years.
