Drivers call for hard tyre axe

Drivers are calling out to Pirelli to get rid of the hard tyre, as it is deemed all but useless throughout a race weekend. This weekend, the hard tyre was brought to Spain but has not been used and is very unlikely to feature during the race.

This year, Pirelli has changed the way the tyre works, with drivers having more room to push on the tyres rather than conserve them and drive as to not wear them down, something they've been doing for many years up to now.

There have been comments that Pirelli has been too conservative in what tyres they bring to a weekend: "Pirelli has been perhaps a little too conservative," said Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel. "The tyres here are too hard."

Daniel Ricciardo also spoke about the tyres, stating that they brought the issue up in a driver meeting to prevent Pirelli bringing the compound to Silverstone in July:  "In the drivers' briefing we brought up the tyres because we would prefer not to have these hard tyres anymore -- at any track. We're supposed to use them in Silverstone but we're going to try to stop that," he is quoted by Speed Week.
