Gerhard Berger hopes Vettel does a DTM race

F1 legend Gerhard Berger hopes Fernando Alonso's decision to do the Indy 500 next month is the start of a new trend. "It's like the old days," said the former Ferrari and McLaren driver, referring to when drivers would routinely combine their F1 duties with races into other categories.

"We must finally break these formalities," Berger told Auto Motor und Sport. "In 1985 I drove for Arrows in Adelaide and the day before did a national touring car race for Bob Jane," he recalled. "It was still possible in those days and everyone had their fun."

Berger is now the boss of the German touring car series DTM, and he hopes Alonso's move to Indy is the start of a new trend. "I'm sure Vettel would like to do DTM races if he could," said the Austrian. "Drivers today have much more spare time than we used to, as there is hardly any testing." (GMM)

  • I'd like to see that, though Im sure Ferrari wouldnt allow that. Its more likely to see him in a touring series driving one of their cars, and I wouldnt mind that either. Well, unless its Super GT, I dont think he'd like driving that Ferrari, it gets frequently beaten to a pulp by Toyota... Priuses? Prii? Prius? (plural?). Though to be fair that 488 isnt a works Ferrari car, and that probably doesnt help it.

surely vettel won´t do dtm as long as he is racing.
He´s going to be like Schumacher after his career and that means no more car racing except F1 cars on public race days or something like that.
