Vettel doesn't think pole position was in reach

Sebastian Vettel will line up on the front row of the grid for tomorrow's race in Melbourne, splitting the two Mercedes cars. It seems that Ferrari does possess the pace to challenge Mercedes this year after the top three in qualifying were covered by three-tenths of a second.

Vettel says that a couple of minor errors did not cause him to miss out on pole position: "We have a good car, we're working well as a team, things are improving, it's nice to see things are working," Vettel said.

"We had a mixed day yesterday but the confidence in the car was there from testing and we showed it again [during qualifying]. In the end I was not entirely happy with my lap, I'm pretty happy with the end, maybe not so much with the opening of the lap, where we lost a bit too much. But I think Lewis did a very good lap so, I don't think – I would have loved to – but I don't think pole was out to grasp."

Vettel is hoping he can convert his front row start into a very strong result, as the German hasn't won a Grand Prix since the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix.

"Tomorrow I think we can do something in the race," Vettel commented. "The car feels good, we've improved it, so the pace should be better than yesterday.

"It's been a big winter for us, there's a lot of change we've gone through as a team in the last 12 months, for the better, the team's getting stronger and everyone is pushing very hard.

"It's not easy to come here with a long journey to get to Australia, but people are fired up and we're motivated for tomorrow, and the start [of the race] is the first good opportunity."
