Canada GP secure through 2029 - promoter

The future of the Canadian Grand Prix appears to be safe as the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is set to host the race until the year 2029.

Only a number of months ago, the future of the event was under scrutiny, as were many other Grands Prix, but the future is bright for the North American race, according to promoter Francois Dumontier.

"Some said the end was 2028, but it's 2029," he told the Journal de Montreal newspaper in Barcelona. "This is nothing new. I'm not telling you anything new.

"The meeting was favourable. Their vision of the future is interesting and it's music to our ears. But we have to give them time, because these people are in a very sharp learning curve. That being said, they seem to have an openness to discuss and work with promoters."

Dumontier says that he was in Barcelona to see Lance Stroll take part in the pre-season test. Canadian Stroll will take part in his first season of Formula 1 this year.

"As promoter of the Canadian Grand Prix, I had to be here," he said. "Personally, I feel an excitement around Lance and I am moved and very proud to see him arrive in F1, especially since I've known him since he was a boy."
