Fernando Alonso has said that the new-for-2017 regulations may help him rekindle his love for Formula One.
Alonso has been one of the more outspoken drivers in recent years, criticising the need to nurse tyres and fuel loads, which has resulted in decreased speeds over the last decade.
Speaking to Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Alonso said that he will assess his place in F1 when he has tried his 2017 car.
"Next year I will take stock," he said. "The important thing is that I have fun again. 2017 will give the answers to my questions like are the cars as quick as they used to be? Do I have to keep saving tyres and fuel?"
Despite McLaren Honda's vast power deficit to the class-leading Mercedes, Alonso said that next year's regulations could provide a perfect platform for team's to topple the dominant German marque.
"We need more power," he admitted. "Even if Honda had as much power as Mercedes, it would not be enough because Mercedes' overall package is excellent."
"That's why it is so important that F1 is getting a new set of regulations," Alonso added.
Despite that, Alonso still fears that the new rules could leave one team ass a dominant force out in front.
"That's the question mark," he acknowledged, "but it also gives everybody hope. Otherwise Mercedes would have just kept managing their advantage."
