Continuing his strong form in Detroit after winning Race 1 on Saturday, Josef Newgarden grabbed pole position for the second and final race of the weekend.
Newgarden was out in group two, a session that was delayed after rainwater from the tyre barrier and tarpaulin at Turn 6 suddenly spilt onto the circuit, bringing out the red flag.
"It was a good lap," Newgarden said. "I got pole on the first lap. I could tell the temperatures were coming up quicker than yesterday.
"Normally, second lap [is quicker]. I could see the grip was already there, so I had to go. Must have gotten lucky. I guess it worked out."
Although he was almost half a second down on Newgarden in the second group, Zach Veach was second and secures his best ever qualifying result behind his Andretti teammate.
Sharing the second row for the start of the race is rookie Colton Herta, who is still yet to record a top 20 finish since his victory at the Circuit of the Americas earlier this year.
James Hinchliffe was fifth ahead of the two Chip Ganassi cars of Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist. Dixon will be looking to redeem his weekend after making a rare mistake on Saturday, which eliminated him from the race.
Behind Rosenqvist was the third rookie inside the top ten, as Mexico's Patricio O'Ward slotted into eighth place ahead of Sebastien Bourdais and Spencer Pigot.
Will Power once again failed to qualify inside the top ten, as he will line up eleventh alongside Marcus Ericsson.
Reigning Indianapolis 500 champion Simon Pagenaud had a poor qualifying and will start the race in 14th behind the Ed Carpenter Racing car of Ed Jones.
