Simon Pagenaud beats Will Power to Mid-Ohio pole

Simon Pagenaud will start today's IndyCar race at Mid-Ohio from pole position after beating Penske team mate Will Power by three hundredths of a second in a session that was run in changeable conditions which saw teams under pressure to find the best moment to get on track.

Pagenaud's record breaking lap time of 1 minute 3.870 seconds was his sixth pole position of the year and gave his a valuable point towards his title charge.

Josef Newgarden will start third, ahead of former champion Ryan Hunter-Reay. Charlie Kimball and Graham Rahal completed the Fast Six.

Pagenaud and Power's Penske team mates Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya will start seventh and eighth while James Hicnhcliffe and Mikhail Aleshin round out the top 10.

Scott Dixon was 11th fastest, ahead of former Marussia Formula One pair Alexander Rossi and Max Chilton.

The other former F1 drivers in the field, Sebastien Bourdais and Takuma Sato qualified 16th and 20th respectively
