The father of Indy Lights racer RC Enerson is being sued by team owner Sam Schmidt.

Neil Enerson reportedly owes Schmidt's team, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, money to the sum of almost half a million dollars according to RACER.

The Enersons opted to leave the Indy Lights series after the Indianapolis rounds in may due to RC's championship standing (seventh) which meant he was likely to miss out on the IndyCar scholarship prize. Instead, opted to use the budget for the rest of the year to secure an IndyCar seat. He will make his début this weekend driving for Dale Coyne's team (pictured).

Despite the legal action, Schmidt isn't seeking to stop Enerson competing in IndyCar this weekend and beyond.

"RC has nothing to do with it and I don't want to impede his career," he said. "It's a straight business deal. We paid all of our bills in advance of being paid by them, and they don't want to pay. It's a shame."

"I've been in the paddock for 20 years and have never had a reason to formally take someone to court to resolve something," Schmidt continued. "It's a shame because we think the absolute world of RC. He's a talented driver and we believe he absolutely belongs in IndyCar full time. But here we are, almost the end of July, going through normal channels to try and resolve the situation, and the other side will absolutely not return emails or voicemails or anything. They won't sit down at the table face to face to have a business discussion. It's the last resort."

"We're owed money, one person won't respond, and then they go take a bunch of money to another team to spend somewhere else," he added. "It just doesn't make sense. It's frustrating – again, I've never had to do this in our entire career, but we have a business to run. We felt like we did everything we said we'd do, and they decided to go a different direction, but you still have to take care of your commitments."
