Practice sessions to count towards superlicense points

Drivers will be able to earn points on their superlicense by competing in Formula 1 free practice session from 2020 onwards, the FIA has confirmed.

W Series is also recognised as a category in which points can be awarded, as it contests its maiden championship this year.

When a driver obtains 40 super license points, they are eligible for a race seat in Formula 1, while they need only 25 in order to compete in a free practice session.

Last time out in Canada, Nicholas Latifi made his FP1 debut for Williams, replacing Robert Kubica in the FW42 for the opening session of the weekend.

Drivers will now be awarded a single point for every free practice session they take part in, granted they complete 100km of running and don't pick up any penalty points. Only 10 points can be given to a driver across a three year period.

W Series and the Euroformula Open will be recognised by the FIA as series' in which drivers can build up their super license points as they climb the racing ladder.

However, it has not been confirmed how many points will be awarded, and how many drivers will receive the points.

The FIA added that a "maximum of two championships can be accumulated from a single calendar year, provided that the start of the second championship falls after the end date of the first championship during the year in question".
