Mercedes have again hit out at rumours it may quit the sport after receiving positive news from sponsors Petronas.

It has been suggested that Mercedes may decide to quit the sport in the coming years if it becomes less financially viable for them to continue, and especially if they lose a competitive edge on the competition.

Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, slammed Eddie Jordan for making these suggestions, remaining adamant that major sponsors Petronas and UBS were going to stay beyond the end of next year and brandishing Jordan’s suggestions as “fake news.”

But at Silverstone Mercedes announced that major sponsor, Petronas would be extending their contract with the team, despite the Malaysian outfits home Grand Prix having potentially its last event later this year.

Mercedes announced the deal by saying there would be a “multi-year extension of the title partnership will cement more than a decade of partnership between Mercedes and Petronas Although this (2017) may be our sport's final visit to Sepang for the foreseeable future, Petronas is committed to formula one and to Mercedes for the long term."

Petronas themselves went on to add: "We intend to stay the course, The partnership has given us very positive results for many years and I am pleased to announce the extension of the sponsorship contract with the team."

  • Good for them, Petronas has been in F1 for quite a while now, and I'd hate it if they left.
