Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting has announced that F1 will see cockpit protection in 2018. There has been much debate in recent years about driver safety, with a split being created within the paddock over the potential introduction of a concept to further protect the driver's head.
The first system to come to light was the 'Halo' which was slammed by drivers and fans alike for how it looked. It now appears to be shelved with the FIA creating the 'shield' which is set to make its debut next weekend in Silverstone.
If the shield is deemed not suitable for use, then Whiting said the halo will feature on the 2017 cars: "Then the Halo will come in. There will be some sort of cockpit protection in 2018," he insisted.
However, the 'shield' remains the favourite to be introduced as it is reported to be much more efficient than the Halo: "It is structurally much easier to integrate into the chassis than the Halo," said Force India technical boss Andy Green. "And its aerodynamic effects are significantly lower than in the case of the Halo."
