Haas driver Romain Grosjean has played down the importance of the reports that the Haas team are using spotters to help the drivers at this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Spotters are used primarily in American oval based racing, such as Indycar, to help inform drivers what is happening on track around them, aiding them in overtaking and defensive driving, especially because of the lack of mirrors on their cars.
The Haas team are the only American-based team on the grid and may have been inspired to use this technique by the team’s Nascar counterparts, in addition to the usual GPS system that all other teams on the grid use to deal with traffic.
It has been reported that the Haas team were to be using such a technique in Baku, but Grosjean was quick to play down the importance of it. The Frenchman said when asked about the reports: "I would not exaggerate that, Yes, we are trying to do our work more precisely in qualifying, in order to avoid problems with traffic. But I think other teams also use this method."
