Carlos Sainz says that compatriot Fernando Alonso will represent Formula 1 well as the 35-year-old prepares to compete in his first ever Indy 500 race. The two-time world champion announced last month that he would not be present at Monaco as he would be racing 200 laps around the most famous oval race in the world.
Alonso qualified fifth on Sunday, a result that was hailed by many. Sainz revealed that he was actually watching his friend qualify for next Sunday's event, but was not surprised about his result.
"I watched qualifying and was not surprised how well he did. I knew he would," the 22-year-old told the Spanish daily Marca. "The race is another story, very long and with so much that can happen, but I'm sure he will also do well.
"I'm sure all of us Formula 1 drivers in Monaco will be watching and encouraging him, hoping he does well and that he represents us well," Sainz added.
The Indy 500 will take place next Sunday and there will be many eyes on Alonso as motorsport fans worldwide tune in to see what he can do in one of motorsport's toughest races.
