Felipe Massa has thrown up the suggestion that Formula 1 needs to bring back the right engine sound to make the fans happier. F1 recently proposed new regulations for 2021 in which we will see new engines, however, the details have not yet been revealed.
A new regulation change was brought in for 2017, adding much more downforce to the cars which means they can take much more speed through the corners. However, Massa says that the sound remains the most important aspect to the fans.
"The new cars offer much cornering grip and lie down on the road," the Brazilian said to Motorsport-Total.com. "However it must be said that the sound is still desired, and that is an important point for the fans. The sound is more important than three seconds of lap time. If the sound is good, the fans are happy."
"The current powertrains produce more power than the V10 engines of more than ten years ago. The technology is incredible, but you should also take into consideration other aspects. The show is, in fact, a different story. The sound is not great, and that is something people do consider when deciding whether or not to visit."
