Brawn wants "more Verstappen's" in F1

Sporting Director of Formula 1 Ross Brawn says that he wants to see only the best drivers in F1, pointing to prodigy Max Verstappen as an example of who drivers in lower categories should look up to.

Brawn is clearly a big fan of the Dutchman: "Verstappen is obviously an exciting element of Formula 1," Brawn said this week, speaking to the official F1 website.

The former team owner is gripped by the current battle between Red Bull drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen: "At Red Bull, you have a fascinating competition between Ricciardo and Verstappen.

"My dream for this five-year plan is that we have more Verstappen's in Formula 1. We want a system that sees only the best drivers. Don’t get me wrong, there is a good standard of drivers in Formula 1," he added. "But if we didn’t have the commercial requirements that some of the teams have regarding their drivers, we could raise the standard even higher.

Brawn also said that he isn't a fan of Nico Rosberg's decision to retire from the sport, as it is not very healthy to not have a reigning world champion on the grid.

"It is not ideal. From a sporting perspective it is good to have the world champion on the grid as a reference. But it is better that Nico retired if he felt that he didn’t want to face up to it any more, than being on the grid without the level of motivation he would need.

"For him it was probably the right decision. And probably for the sport it was as well, because we wouldn’t want to see a world champion in decline. That’s not great for the sport either."
