Too early for Verstappen title in 2017 - father

Max Verstappen's father Jos has played down his son's chances of winning the 2017 Formula 1 title. Red Bull are tipped to be Mercedes' closest challengers next year when the new regulations come into play.

However, Verstappen Snr believes that it is simply too early for his son to challenge for the world title.

"Of course there is talk of a world title," the 44-year-old former Benetton driver said, "but my personal opinion is that it is still a year too early."

"Last year Max won in Spain, so hopefully he can win more races this year. I would like to see three or four, and I think it's possible," he told the Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport Totaal. "Red Bull has always been strong with new rules, and with the information that I have, I think it looks really good."

He also confirmed that his son is training incredibly hard to prepare for the new cars, which will be much tougher to drive.

"He has put on three or four kilos, mainly in muscle mass. You can see it on his neck and arms. He is training really hard, but he had to because the cars will be much faster, especially in the corners."

  • Useless comments.. If he is in a championship winning car he needs to be ready, regardless of age

    • Well if some other drivers force there respect on trac instead of whining, maybe he would have more respect for them as well.

saw the interview and it's nothing more than a couple of comments to defuse the pressure building on Max. He knows if max gets a championship winning car under him he will be a force to be reckonned with. He's ready.
