Executive Director of Mercedes Toto Wolff believes that the gap from Mercedes to the rest of the field is diminishing.
The Silver Arrows have enjoyed tremendous success since the turn of the hybrid era in 2014. However, Wolff believes that the gap is now decreasing and that this year has been the toughest one yet.
It is of course, hard to judge as Mercedes currently sit 208 points ahead of Red Bull in the constructor standings. The team has taken victory at 47 of the 55 Grands Prix since 2014.
"It wasn’t as dominant of a season as it was last year, and for me it’s just the fact of diminishing returns with the stable regulation," he explained.
"It’s what we always said, leave the regulations and leave the rules alone and the performance gap is going to shrink and eventually we’re going to have some good racing.
"Then somebody else decided to invent something new for next year and then it’s back to square one I guess."
