It started off with car launches from Force India, Red Bull and Mercedes, with Marussia and Caterham having to delay theirs due to technical issues, with the former preferring to resolve the problem back at their factory in Britain.
The track opened shortly after 9am, with Hamilton heading out first for an installation lap in his Mercedes W05. Kimi Raikkonen headed out shortly afterwards, but stopped on track at the request of his team.
Action was rife for the first three hours, with only Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Jean-Eric Vergne posting timed laps. However, shortly before 12pm Hamilton suffered a front-wing failure and was sent into the barriers at Turn 1.
He escaped unharmed but it ended his and Mercedes' running for Day 1, which left the door open for Raikkonen to claim top honours.
Caterham finally got their 2014 car, the T05 out on track shortly after 3pm but failed to set a timed lap. This was also the case for Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel, who spun on his installation lap.
McLaren was another name absent from the timesheets, leaving electrical and hydraulic problems to blame. They are optimistic of running tomorrow morning, however.
