Fernando Alonso says he is not sure changing the points system is a good move for F1.
Over the British grand prix weekend, it emerged that at the latest strategy group meeting, a proposal to expand the points paying positions from the top 10 to the top 15 cars had been tabled.
In all honesty, I would prefer if they brought back top 6 only points but if they plan on rewarding 15 positions then they should just do it for the whole grid. 1 through 15 - 17 - 20 - 24 - 30
I like it! It helps reward drivers outside of tge top 10 tgat performs well, and helps to further see how good the teams are. But I thikk ooints up to p12 or p13 would be an okay middleground.
Actually it does, because now its worth something to get to p15 . I found it annoying that guys like Wehrlein could push hard in a lousy car and still get no reward for their efforts.
I totally agree with @Calle.itw, where is the motivation for the lower place drivers to actually fight and drive hard, after all isn't that what we watch for? To see drivers battling it out, doing the best with what they have and inspiring the teams themselves to have a go rather than turning down the engines and saving costs. It would also reward reliability and consistency for teams outside the top 10.
How though? You still wont get points for ending below p15, which is still 5 cars, you will probably have to finish to grab points, and its easier to settle the score between the lowscoring teams, where their good performances rarely ever show. And if there are points on the line, Im sure the competition will get more fierce. Finally, having points down to p15 could be a good way to make sure the drivers who get screwed over by this very token 3 engine retardation doesnt get as screwed over. But I personally feel points down to p15 is a bit excessive, p13 is a sweetspot IMO.
Maybe it's just me but I would prefer articles on the proposed changes rather than articles on which driver/manager/has been has been offended or feels neglected by the proposed changes.
At least this article didn't have the title "Alonso slams new points system proposal". It's good to see journalists can used synonyms for "slammed". But I don't hold out that much hope, give it a few days and slamming will be back.
I think the present system works, the gap between first and second I feel should be a point more, but maybe scoring to 15 will add a new dimension - as I understand it, the prize money is distributed per final positions, so by scoring lower down the order, it will remove some of the possibility of fluke one-off's tainting the normal order of finishing at the season end. It would also permit some increase in motivation for fans of the lower order teams/drivers. Seems a relatively painless thing to trial, so why not?
