Toto Wolff: "McLaren deal is not a priority for Mercedes"

Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff has remained reluctant to talk about the possibility of supplying engines to McLaren. McLaren is said to have lost patience with Honda after having numerous reliability issues and still producing an engine which is thought to have around 100bhp less than the lead Ferrari and Mercedes engines.

This has led to the belief in Honda’s ability to ever produce a capable engine dropping after three years of persistence. It is believed that if McLaren were to leave Honda that Mercedes would be the most obvious candidate to supply McLaren, as they had a long and successful partnership winning three drivers championships together as well as one constructor championship.

However, Wolff was reluctant to speculate further whilst no decisions have been made on the future of McLaren-Honda. When asked about the subject Wolff responded with: "If you are considering a new girlfriend, you first want the couple to divorce before jumping into bed.

"It's not our priority at the moment, The most important thing is for Honda to improve, to continue in the sport and to have a good deal with its customers or teams. We do not want to interfere at this stage."

  • No, I figured as much. My guess is that McLaren will have to take another year with the Honda package, for better or worse.
