Lauda denies Mercedes to assist Honda rumours

Niki Lauda has denied suggestions that Mercedes are set to help Honda amid their struggles in Formula 1. Since their return to the sport in 2015, Honda has been lacking power and reliability in comparison to their fellow competitors.

Rumours from the Barcelona paddock suggest that Mercedes will bail Honda out by either helping them with their design or supplying McLaren with Mercedes power units which have had the field advantage since the introduction of the turbo era in 2014.

"It's all nonsense. Why should we help Honda when we have our own car? There are skilled engineers at Honda, as they show in MotoGP, which is also a state of the art engine," he said.

Speaking on Fernando Alonso's fantastic qualifying achievement yesterday, Honda chief Yusuke Hasegawa said: "First of all, I want to say what a superb job Fernando did today in qualifying in front of his enthusiastic home crowd. He had a difficult start to the weekend, but both Fernando and the team worked incredibly hard to overcome this and find the optimal setting for qualifying. P7 was an encouraging result that saw us reach Q3 for the first time this season."
