Carlos Sainz expects Singapore to show whether or not Toro Rosso's latest upgrades will work well for the rest of the season.
The Red Bull-owned team has slipped back in recent events after fighting in the top five in the standings earlier this season, with them being held back by their year-old Ferrari powerplants while their rivals had access to the latest equipment.
Sainz said that while the handling of the car is good, if their upgrades don't help close the gap where the engine can't, they could be set for a long final few races.
If we don't perform in Singapore then I would be very worried, " he told Autosport. "I would be expecting a very tough second half of the season and we'll be praying for rain."
"But if we are top 10 or close in Singapore then we can be optimistic then at least we are not going to battle for P16 at all the races," he added.
The son of rallying legend Carlos Sainz Sr. also said that the street race under the lights in Singapore could present Toro Rosso with their final points scoring opportunity of the season.
"Now it's important for Singapore to take a direction, to commit to it and make sure the whole weekend of Singapore we surround one set-up, one aerodynamical [sic] package," he said. "This could be our last clear chance of scoring points this season."
