Lauda unable to travel by air after lung operation

Niki Lauda may be absent from the Formula 1 paddock for the rest of the season as he recovers from his lung transplant operation. The Austrian had an emergency operation after complications arose from a diagnosis of acute lung disease.

The operation was a success, and Lauda was placed in an artificial coma before being woken up. The three-time world champion is now recovering well, but may be absent from the F1 paddock for the rest of the season.

Osterreich, an Austrian publication, reports that Lauda will not be able to travel by air for the next six months. And he has been told to holiday only in "neighbouring countries" so that he can return quickly to the hospital in Vienna if need be.

Lauda has worked with the Mercedes F1 team since 2012, holding the role of non-executive chairman. Last year, he retired as an expert pundit from RTL, but still resides in the paddock when F1 arrives.
