Ericsson handed grid penalty for yellow flag infringement

Marcus Ericsson has been handed a five-place grid penalty after the stewards deemed that he failed to slow sufficiently in a yellow flag zone during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Yellow flags were deployed after Ericsson's teammate Charles Leclerc spun at the final corner. Ericsson was on a fast lap himself and veered out of the way of the stricken Monegasque driver. However, it was judged that Ericsson did not slow down enough and failed to adhere to the caution flags.

A statement from the FIA read: "The Stewards heard from Marcus Ericsson, the driver of car 9 and the team representative and reviewed the video evidence which clearly showed that the driver attempted to set a meaningful lap time after passing through a double waved yellow marshalling sector, contrary to the requirements set out in the Race Director's Event Notes (10.1) in breach of Article 12.1.1 i."

As Ericsson qualified in last place, there will be no practical change, as he was already due to start from the back of the field. In addition to the grid-penalty, the Swede has had three penalty points added to his license, moving his total to five in the past 12 months.
