F1 looking at aero changes for 2019

Formula 1 is considering altering the current aero designs for the 2019 season, according to Auto Motor und Sport. The current set of complex aerodynamic regulations were introduced last season which heavily boosted downforce from the year before.

But now there are reports that increasing complexity in the detail around the sidepods and rear wing endplates in particular is making it hard for teams to place legible sponsor logos. Therefore, it seems the teams, the FIA and Liberty are working on a new plan for 2019.

The now familiar aerodynamic 'slots' will be banned, bargeboards will be made smaller, and other ideas are being studied: "A vote will be taken on which proposal to adopt at a strategy meeting in April," correspondent Michael Schmidt said.

Be nice if they consider tweaks that improve the chances for close racing & overtaking at the same time!

I doubt they have anything majors for closer racing yet. I wish they reverse some aero regulations that were designed to reduce aerodynamic performance of cars. Those include but are not limited to front wing splitting around nose, shirt around floor, minimum ride height, narrower tyres and active suspension. But those would provide much less drag for similar downforce so those changes would have to be combined with PU regulation change which would take PU down to 400-600hp range to make racing safe on current tracks. Also narrow tyres are unlikely to happen unless there is huge improvements to thermal properties of tyres.

Just make them pull trailers with billboards and there you have it.

How about teams like McLaren who don't have any sponsors? What's the difference if people can't read stuff off of places where nothing will ever be written?

    • They can write "MCLAREN" with big letters on every centimeter of those posters instead, or text like "TITLE SPONSOR WANTED"... Or I suppose they could leave them blank... Thats pretty much the same thing as the latter suggestion...

I was really wow’d by this article until I reached the back end of 2nd paragraph. Stuff the close racing, get the money in. These cars are the fastest toast racks on the planet there’s so many fins.
