Brown wants more races in Asia on the calendar

Zak Brown says that he feels there is more room for Formula 1 in Asia as F1 looks to grow its market. We already have iconic and fan favourite races in places such as Japan and Singapore, while China has hosted a race since 2004.

"One of the global regions in which I think Formula 1 can really make significant further inroads is Asia," he wrote in a blog for Linkedin. "We already have a successful, long-standing race in Japan, at Suzuka, which is a fantastic venue for Formula 1 – the drivers love it, and it’s a real asset to the sport. And of course, Singapore is arguably the most important race on the calendar."

The Malaysian Grand Prix will drop off the calendar at the end of the season, to the disappointment of many who enjoy the race. Organisers of the event have since said that they will consider rejoining the sport if the racing in F1 improves.

Brown went on to suggest in his blog that China should consider hosting a second race.  With Shangai being the current host of the Chinese Grand Prix, Brown suggested the old city of Wuxi would be a nice place to bring F1.

"If you look at a truly massive Asian economy, China, I think there’s definitely room within that marketplace for a second race. Of course, the Grand Prix in Shanghai is already well established, but we should explore the possibility of a race in another major city, such as Beijing, or a street race in a city like Wuxi, a place that’s growing ambitiously and enormously."

With Liberty Media previously stating they plan to group continental events together, Brown has seconded the idea by forwarding the possibility of an 'Asian tour': "I don’t see why we can’t create an ‘Asian tour for Formula 1’ – as a part of the normal Formula 1 World Championship – taking in Singapore, Japan, two races in China, and even a couple of additional venues."

  • Malaysia should definitely be replaced with another Asian race. We could probably fit in another one. Would be nice with an African race and another Latin American race, if it is possible at all.
