Sainz sure Renault can improve 2017 engine

Carlos Sainz has responded to the comments by Renault who say that there will be no more improvements on the 2017 engine. In Canada, Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul reported that the next major update to the engine would not be until 2018.

Renault has struggled in terms of performance in relation to Mercedes and Ferrari this season after making some steady improvements in 2016. There was rumoured to be a big upgrade coming in Baku, but that has since been scrapped.

"We expect updates from Renault," Toro Rosso's Sainz said.  "We are not putting pressure on them because we know that nothing good will come of that. We are partners, and we will wait as long as necessary. But I am sure they will find a way to increase the efficiency of the engine."

Renault supply engines to Red Bull and Toro Rosso and the lack of performance has been seen as a major disadvantage to all teams, especially Red Bull who were expected to fight at the front of the field in 2017.

  • Im sure they will. I doubt it will become comparable to Ferrari's unit, but I think they can get close.
