Hill believes Verstappen should watch his words over the radio

Damon Hill has spoken out against Max Verstappen and his actions during the Monaco Grand Prix. The Dutchman was jumped by his teammate after the round of pit stops and was clearly upset about the situation, as he burst out in anger over the team radio.

After the race, Verstappen went and talked to Christian Horner and Dr Helmut Marko to discuss things before he went out to face the press, giving very timid answeres to clearly express his disappointment with the result: "Every driver must realise that in Formula 1 today, almost all the radio traffic is broadcast live on television," 1996 champion Hill said. "You should keep an eye on your words. Max was over the edge in Monaco. He should be aware that there are young viewers that hear these things also."

Despite being young, Hill believes that the Dutchman has shown great maturity and that this moment of hot-headedness will be something to learn even more from: "Max has certainly learned from Monaco that there is always some friction between the team and a driver when the strategy does not work out. Despite his young age, Verstappen is very mature. He brings the excitement and passion in the sport. The Monaco obstacle can also be ticked off the list now, he will only get better."

If a radio message like the one vettel gave in Mexico last year doesn't even warrant a penalty then this one wasn't even noteworthy

What rubbish is this! I want to hear more frustration & more feelings of the driver!

I don't want to sit for nearly 2hrs listening to commentators telling me what they think the drive is doing, feeling, deal with, strategy etc. I want to hear the driver tell me!

I want to hear the driver out of breath, getting annoyed with others and defiantly the reaction to being overtaken in the pits!

Keep the radio messages coming, it's still up to the TV feed to play them out, as we don't hear everything obviously!!!

  • You can't ask drivers to tame their language in what is supposed to be confidential communications with the team. Furthermore, it is up to the broadcast director (I suppose) to determine which messages get broadcasted.
