We are saddened to learn of the death of Sir John Surtees, the 1964 F1 world champion and only man to win world titles on both two wheels and four.
The news was announced on Friday afternoon in a statement from his family, which read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our husband and father, John Surtees CBE.

"John, 83, was admitted to St George's Hospital, London, in February with an existing respiratory condition and after a short period in intensive care he passed away peacefully this afternoon. His wife Jane and daughters Leonora and Edwina were by his side. John was a loving husband, brother and friend. He was also one of the true greats of motorsport and continued to work tirelessly up until recently with The Henry Surtees Foundation and Buckmore Park Kart Circuit.
"We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life. He has set a very real example of someone who kept pushing himself at his peak and one who continued fighting until the very end."
F1Today would like to join the motorsport fraternity in sending its utmost condolences to the Surtees family at this very sad time. Sir John was, and will continue to be, a truly legendary figure thanks to his unique achievements, which will undoubtedly be fondly remembered by his family, friends, colleagues and fans across the world. He will be sorely missed.

If the word Gentleman ever really applied to anyone, it would definitely have been correct for John. I met him a good many times in my days as a marshall and will miss his extraordinary devotion to this sport.
