The GP2 is set to be re-named to Formula 2, in light of Liberty Media F1 takeover. The series, which supports many F1 weekends, is now under control by Liberty Media.

The FIA have been in negotiations with the series for a long time in a bid to get it re-named to Formula 2, however complications were generated when Bernie Ecclestone proposed that GP2 and GP3 govern themselves.

It is reported that the series is trying to become re-named for the 2017 season, however a deal may not be done in place. With Bernie Ecclestone out of the picture, talks are going much smoother.

GP2 is seen as the ultimate feeder series to F1 and the biggest test before stepping into an F1 seat. Although other series (F3, GP3, DTM) have produced current F1 drivers, GP2 is still seen as an important part of establishing a drivers maturity.
