Leading engineers have said that the decision to delay the introduction of the head protection device formerly known as 'Halo' will allow it to be worked on and refined.
During last week's Strategy Group meeting, it was decided that the device would not be introduced next year, but is slated to come in for the 2018 season.
"With twelve additional months we can deliver a significantly better job with aspects adhering to the halo where we were not a hundred percent satisfied," said Mercedes' Paddy Lowe. "It is important to use the coming year to further develop the system so that we can be sure that we tick all the important points in favour of safety."
"We are there close to it, but this solution is not sufficient even if the sport wants to get it right, there is still a need for more research with the halo," added Red Bull Racing engineer Paul Monaghan. "We have one lap with it.. driven on one circuit. That is not the desired process to introduce this kind of thing. It was the right decision to put it off."
"Of course it is important to put twelve additional months to good use as Paddy indicates. Over a year, we know more," concluded Ferrari's Jock Clear. " We need to get to work. The teams and Charlie Whiting will take their responsibility to do it thoroughly."
