F1 should relax the rules regarding track limits so that all drivers can exploit the potential of asphalt for the fastest possible lap times says Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff
Track limits have been a bit talking point in recent weeks. The FIA wanted there to be a zero tolerance policy, but the Strategy Group sees exceeding the limits as a part of the sport.Wolff belongs to the supporters of the latter view.
"If get drivers off the track, they would have to end up in the wall or in a gravel trap and if there still is asphalt, why not let them ride the fastest lines? What is the difference?" he told Autosport. "We have huge run-off areas and it is becoming less spectacular, but in the meantime we ask ourselves why the public interest decreases for F1."
"So if you ask me, let drivers just keep the fastest line in corners like Copse, Club or wherever. If it is something unsafe because they are really close to the fence or when someone does not pay attention to the return to the track you can always deal with those specific cases," he said. "But for the rest, let them drive. This creates spectacular images. If we analyse each time someone goes two centimetres over or has gone on a white line, it has no end. "
