Strategy Group to discuss Halo on Thursday

Formula One's Strategy Group will discuss the latest version of the Halo head protection device, set to be introduced next year, at a meeting in Geneva next week.

The safety feature has been met with a mixed reaction, with many agreeing that a head protection solution is needed, but there is a belief that the Halo introduction may be too soon.

Drivers were given a presentation by race director Charlie Whiting and FIA safety director Laurent Mekies during a driver briefing in Hungary and the Strategy Group will discuss the device further on Thursday.

Speaking of the presentation given to drivers, Carlos Sainz admitted he's not a fan, but it is something that it needed.

"The voting will start soon. The FIA have done all they can with an item which works pretty well in many situations. After the slides they showed us today and the images, they are quite striking. You can see how it adds [to safety] and how many lives it could have saved," he said. "The drivers, even if we hate it and know it's not in the DNA of the sport, when you look at it, you say it makes some sense.

"I don't like it – but it's like when you're dad tells you you are wrong and you know he is right but you don't want to admit it!"

The Strategy Group has the right to block the introduction of the Halo, but the FIA can overturn their decision and force it through regardless if they deem it necessary on safety grounds.
