Commentator to miss Spain after falling from horse

German television Sky will be without one of its F1 commentators this weekend in Barcelona. Swiss Marc Surer, a veteran of 88 grands prix until the mid-80s, fell off a horse last week during the gap between the Bahrain and Spanish grands prix.

"The horse shied and fell," the 63-year-old, now also a veteran F1 broadcaster, confirmed from his hospital bed, where he is recovering from a broken leg, multiple broken ribs and punctured lung. "The horse is well!" Surer laughed. "After the accident, he got up and trotted past the obstacle that made him panic with no problem!"

It is believed Surer was moved out of intensive care at the weekend, following an operation to insert a rod into his leg. "This will hurt for a while," he said. (GMM)
