Grand Prix in London for 2020?

With doubt now cast over the future of the British Grand Prix, London could take over as host if Silverstone organisers decide to pull out of its contract. Over the weekend, the British Racing Driver's Club said it was highly likely that they would not host a Formula 1 race past 2019.

Joe Saward, a respected motorsport journalist said that a street race in London would be a solution. Rumours of a London Grand Prix are not new, with Liberty Media themselves confirming they are interested in bringing the sport to England's capital.

Due to the rising costs of hosting a race at Silverstone (£26 million in 2017), it is likely that we will see Silverstone off the calendar. However, Saward believes the British Grand Prix can be saved by bringing it to London and introducing a street circuit in the Docklands area.

This is as always a terrible idea. Its the British GP not the london GP. By moving it to london will make it almost entirely out of reach of the rest of the country both financially and transport wise. Also the track will no doubt be bollocks like most street circuits. Silverstone as well as being the home of the British GP is foremost one of the greatest most loved by the drivers tracks out there.

It seems Liberty want to race in prestigious cities. Fortunately, the inhabitants of most of those cities will have different ideas. The Formula E GP in Brussels had to be canceled because noone wanted it in their neighbourhood. And if they're gonna race in a park in the suburbs, what's the point?

F1 does not belong on street circuits, leave that to Formula E. I don't see how shutting down an area of London for a weekend and building pit areas and all other associated costs would be cheaper than using an established track. Pure foolishness!

  f1dave - would be cheaper for BRDC as they wouldn't be the ones with the deal & wouldn't be stuck in Bernie's contract to squeeze more blood from the 'stone every year. Is a shame if it goes that way though as what real fans want is tracks that show off the cars & Silverstone allows high corner speeds plus is in the middle of Motorsport Valley :-)

What is what all these street circuits.. Please bring back or at least create new tracks like Turkey or Imola that are difficult but provide good racing. Its all just promotional and marketing, street circuits

Yawn zzzzzzz. Yawn Another street circuit. Amazing venue for all the corporate champagne swillers, they won't have to get their feet muddy or get up early, just lean over the balcony. Won't need any ordinary F1 public

I think the attendance will be so high because of the population catch, this may in fact work commercially and become the business model of the future, you need big numbers to make a race profitable.
